When he got home, rather limped and drug himself home, it was already daylight and most of his fellow band members had already left for this or that engagement. He was grateful, because the last thing he wanted to do at the moment was to face anyone in the state he was in. All he wanted was to lick his wounds and try to digest what had happened.
He would probably always love Changmin, at least a part of him would, but love wasn’t always enough. He had to decide if he could live with the person Changmin was, if he could continually be put in this state.
He collapsed on the living room floor, a crumpled heap of pain and torment, and gave up on the idea of crawling to his room, unless he wanted to trying to army shimmy across the room, down the hall, and then up the stairs, a feat that would be impossible had he been in zero pain.
Again, he thanked his lucky stars that he was the only one home, and set about trying to absorb the scenes that flitted through his mind. That luck was short-lived as he heard someone tread through the room, gasp upon seeing him.
Donghae had planned it out around midnight, the best time for making the darkest of plans. He would wait till everyone else was gone, and, leaving the note on the kitchen table, take a new razor and end it all. The path had to end somewhere, and the bumps along the way had become too much for him.
Thus, with everyone gone for two hours, it was time to execute – pardon his pun – his plan. But on the way to the kitchen with his note his eyes caught sight of the suffering Eunhyuk, and it went against all the love in his heart to leave him like that.
Truth be told, Donghae didn’t really want to die, and was glad that he wasn’t alone after, after being left alone in spirit so many times.
“Eunhyuk” he ventured when his voice returned; the vision of his Hyukkie in this state was poignantly painful. “Are you – what happened?” His thoughts didn’t piece together logically, but he figured logic was overrated as he knelt beside the older boy, gasping at the burns and bruises.
There was no response for Eunhyuk; it was too painful to breathe shallowly, not to mention speaking.
Playing the knight in shining armor, Donghae rightly took no response as a I’m-in-hell’s-version-of-pain and gently lifted the older, decided a warm soak and nap were in order. He grimaced when the older hissed in pain the moment the hot water touched the sensitive welts decorating his back, and wished that they was a simple solution, a kiss-it-and-make-it-better kind of answer.
The only thing the older managed to utter before sleep fell upon him was “don’t call Eeteuk omma.” Donghae sighed, knowing that Eeteuk would know how to handle this, but also realizing how afraid Hyuk was to let Teuk see him like this; Teukkie would hurt emotionally for days and send Kangin out to annihilate the bastard who did this. Yes, calling Eeteuk was out of the question, at least not until Hyuk looked better.
Donghae felt guilty for reveling in the feeling of being needed as he tucked Eunhyuk into bed and crawled in beside him to watch over his love and ward of any lingering fear.
The dropped note was forgotten on the living room floor.
---~~~---
HanGeng was the first to return, and being considerate and observant, noticed the note immediately. Racing to the bathroom, he was shocked to find it empty, although traces of blood were blatantly evident in what was surprisingly normally a clean room. Eeteuk omma could not stand germs in his bathroom.
Pulse haltingly becoming increasingly speedy, he started checking the dorm rooms, and felt chagrinned when Donghae appeared at the door of Eunhyuk’s room, dirty but intact, a glare and pursed lips shushing as his features. “You – ni haihao ma? – still okay?” he asked in a confused mesh of Chinese and Korean.
A nod. “But Eunhyuk’s not. He needs me.” Donghae couldn’t stop the pride from seeping into his voice underneath the worry.
A nod. Assent and agreement. Understanding.
“I’ve got everything covered hyung. I promise.”
“If you need help…”
“I know. Thank you.”
---~~~---
Eunhyuk woke, not where he last remembered being, and wondered how he got from the door to his bed until he saw the soft head of hair nestled beside him. The first smile in twenty-four hours lit his face. It was going to be okay.
The Path never ended after all, just changed, grew, smoothed over and directionally challenged until he ended where he started, where he was supposed to be.
