Prologue || Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Donghae tried not to cry; really, he did.
He failed.
The moment they all left the stage, Changmin and Eunhyuk trailing off hand in hand, he ran to the dressing room, faced a corner, wrapped his arms around himself, and cried to his heart’s content. Or discontent rather.
And nobody even noticed.
He cried harder, wanting his Hyukkie to notice his tears and apologize, assuring him that it had in fact been only for the audience, only for the fans, only for the girls. But even he knew better.
He had known ever since that drunken night when Eunhyuk had accidentally relieved his Changmin obsession. He had known, and yet had hopes beyond hope to one day take Minnie’s place in Eunhyuk’s heart.
The door to the dressing room opened and he tried to quell his sniffles, wiping his tears hastily away before pasting a bright, yet shaky, smile upon his face.
He was not fooling HanGeng hyung. Not one iota. Not one little bit.
“Hae… ni zenme le?” Hankyung always used the Chinese for this question, and just the simple question, how are you, the habit of it, made him feel a touch better. It would be okay. Things stayed the same between them all, right? Nothing really ever changed, and that was a good thing, right?
More sniffles, a glance up. “I’m fine hyung. Don’t worry.”
HanGeng was not buying that for a moment, but did not press the issue, instead softly embracing the younger as sobs shook the room once more.
Donghae curled into the comfort of his hyung, the generous heart of the older touching his soul, effectively bandaging the hurts, for a time at least, in the simplicity of friendship.
Outside, Eunhyuk looked on, relieved. And shocked that he was only relieved. Relieved that someone else would take care of Donghae, that it was not his responsibility, that it was okay to love Minnie mind, body, and soul.
He was in error, but had he known at the time, would he have cared?
Hyuk entered the room and gathered his things before leaving again, seemingly unnoticed by the two.
Donghae noticed. His heart broke. No attention was granted him. Again.
At least not by the one who counted.
Sniffles and wails, sobs and cries. Echoes bounding off the walls.
Hankyung’s kind heart was breaking at the sound, and he made a mental note that Donghae be allowed to join the potential new subgroup, should it in fact come into being. The best thing for him right now would be to get away from Eunhyuk’s unintentional and cruel disinterest in the younger.
Can’t live without you? Can’t stop loving you? Wrong.
‘The End’ always aides the way. Hankyung would aide in their end, if only to ensure his dongsaeng’s survival, the eventual return of his dongsaeng’s genuine smile.
The Path inches shorter and shorter as the moments go on.
