A guide for newbies
Kpop, also known as Korean Pop, is a style of music in Korea that is very popular across Asia, and recently, across much of the world with international sensations such as Psy making Kpop a known entity.
Personally, I came into Kpop by way of Cpop, way back in 2006. Minwoo (from Shinhwa) was doing his solo career, and I was enamoured. He did covers of songs like Sexy Back, as well as having his own songs, like M Style. Plus, he had/has a really smoking body. Mmmm, yes~ But before I digress :D
Liking Minwoo just led to more and more loves with Korean pop music, and I'm going to try to break this up into trends in Kpop with some examples for each that should not be considered the entire roster of groups/artists because it is FAR from it and doesn't even include all the ones in my iTunes (we'd be here all day if it did) XD.
Wheesung - [1 (Korean version of a Craig David song)] [2 ft. Junhyung from B2ST] [3]
Brian Joo - [1] [2 (English version of In My Head - Jason Derulo)] [3 (English version ft. Jay Park & Dumbfoundead {Dumbfoundead is an awesome rapper from LA that gives a bit of an old-school vibe imo, and Jay Park was originally part of 2PM})]
Lee Hyori - [1] [2] [3]
Fly to the Sky (male) - [1] [2] [3]
Dynamic Duo (male) - [1] [2 (Dynamic Duo are the 1st 2 in Korean. Dumbfounded is the first to go in English. Kero One is the other in English. This is an awesome piece. English captions for all of it. Dumbfounded's shit is always this good. *squees*)] [3 ft. Jungin]
Davichi (female) - [1] [2] [3]
Crown J - [1 ft. Seo In Young] [2 ft. LYN] [3]
Epik High - [1] [2] [3]
Drunken Tiger - [1] [2] [3]
Verbal Jint - [1] [2 ft. 강민희 of MISS $] [3 ft. Ailee]
2AM - [1] [2] [3]
SG Wannabe (trio) - [1] [2 ft. Dongwan] [3]
SS501 - [1 (2010)] [2 (2006)] [3 (2008)]
DBSK - [1] [2] [3 + Japanese version MV]
Big Bang - [1] [2] [3]
MBLAQ ♥ - [1] [2] [3]
2PM - [1] [2] [3]
Super Junior - [1] [2] [3] (I admit to be very into them once upon a time, as anyone can see from my AO3... XD The third MV came out just as I was about to leave their fandom for a deeper interest in Jpop and Jrock. There are 15 guys total in this group, though the exact number has fluctuated recently because Korean men are required to serve in the military for 2 years, even celebrities.)
SNSD - [1] [2] [3] (There are 9 girls in this group.)
Wonder Girls - [1] [2] [3]
f(x) - [1] [2] [3]
2NE1 - [1] [2] [3]
Li Seung Gi (also a great actor) - [1] [2] [3]
T-ara - [1] [2] [3]
4minute - [1] [2] [3]
Brown Eyed Girls - [1] [2] [3]
Psy - [1] [2] [3]
Team H - [1] [2]
Daesung - [1]
Super Junior T (a sub-unit of Super Junior) - [1] [2] [3] (note: with larger groups, they often do sub-units. Super Junior has: Super Junior T, Super Junior H, Super Junior M, and Super Junior KRY.)
Collabs are most often between a pop group/artist that does not have a rapper on board, and a rapper/mc. I've provided one example of that, and one example of when that wasn't the case. Ultimately, a collab is to fill a hole needed for a song. So, like with the Big Bang example, a more rock vibe was needed and they are definitely pop/hip-hop/r&b/rap.
Be Warmed - Davichi ft. Verbal Jint
Oh My Friend - Big Bang ft. No Brain (note: No Brain is an example of the rarely seen entity that we would call 'rock'.)
놈들이 온다 - Wheesung ft. Ailee (translated, just lyrics)
어이없네 (You've got some nerve) - 용준형, 필독, LE (Yong Junhyung, Feeldog, LE)
Rock doesn't appear to be very prevalent in the Korean music scene. What I've listed below is all that I can remember seeing. If you want rock in an Asian language, Jrock or Thai rock would be a better bet. ^_^
Nell (Soft/Alternative Rock) - [1 (Cover of Creep (Radiohead))] [2] [3]
FT Island (Pop-Rock or Rock Ballads) - [1] [2] [3]
CNBlue (Pop-Rock) - [1] [2] [3]
No Brain (Punk Rock) - [1] [2] [3]
The Seed (Metal) - [obscure band that I couldn't find on youtube, sorry]
For the boy bands, you can typically find their songs (at least some of them) in Japanese as well as they promote in Japan which is a second major market for them. Also, I hope you had an eye out for the hip thrusts XD
But all of that above, that's not all that fuels the insane fangirling. Yes, intense fangirling. You just thought that Harry Potter fans were intense. Let me introduce you to the world of fans and anti-fans. Fans of one group have been known to harass other groups or harass females that date any of the men in their groups to the point of physical harm. It's intense, but that's not what everyone does. For a fan in the states, it feels more like an exception than a rule, but that's just my observation from afar. And, that level of love and adoration and the ships, they're all encouraged by the industry and a magical thing called ~fan-service~. Fan-service exist in Jrock too, so anyone from Jrock has an idea of what I'm talking about, though it's a bit different. Click the below for examples.
Super Junior Kissing Game
In which Brian Joo and G.Na pretend to fight over the same man on a Korean variety show
Mir (MBLAQ) kissing his bandmates
Seung Ho in heels at a variety show
Etc! Variety shows essentially make celebrities do all sorts of silly, crazy things for the amusement of the audience XD
Anyways! That's an intro into Kpop. I certainly haven't scratched the surface, but if you're interested in further about a specific group, I might be able to point you to the hang-outs on LJ. Tumblr is also your friend. ^_^
